Mission Focus for July 2026 - Support Malawi
Dear friends, as this month we are supporting Support Malawi (previously called Aquaid), Josie and I thought we would give you an update on the work this year.
In southern Malawi, poverty is not just a statistic, it is part of daily life for thousands of children and families. Support Malawi exists to change that story. Across 12 centres, we provide a place of safety and hope for around 2,000 orphans and vulnerable children and adults, offering not only shelter, clothing and food, but also healthcare, education and a chance for a better future. Over the years, this vision has taken shape through the building of four schools, three healthcare clinics and a girls’ hostel, as well as a skills centre.
This year brought significant challenges. As the cost of living rose sharply, difficult decisions had to be made. Guided by compassion and careful assessment, our social services team worked closely with families to identify children who could now be safely supported at home. While this reduced the number in our direct care from 3,000 to 2,000, it also reflected a quiet success of families regaining stability and independence.
Beyond our centres, our relief programme continues to reach more than 1,500 of the most vulnerable babies, the elderly and those living with disabilities, providing essentials such as maize, blankets, seeds and fertiliser. When the price of maize surged by 30%, we acted swiftly, securing supplies early to ensure no one went without. At Umodzi, a new maize mill now serves both our centres and the wider community, creating a sustainable source of income to support our work.
Even in the face of funding challenges, we continued to deliver agricultural training now to 4,200 families, helping them grow their own food and build resilience for the future. Looking ahead, we remain committed to walking alongside the people of Malawi. From exploring biogas solutions to reduce reliance on firewood to trialling bamboo as a sustainable fuel, we continue to find ways to create lasting, meaningful change.
